Surfer, turquoise barrel wave

It took a visit by Hawaiian surf pioneer Duke Kahanamoku back in 1915 to bring the age-old Polynesian practice of surfing to modern Australia. The dudes and dudettes Down Under took the idea and swam with it, founding many of the world's top surf brands and competitions. Visit most any beach in Oz today and you'll see surfers hanging ten, sometimes by the hundreds. Australia's most famous breaks, like Bells Beach and Crescent Head, lie on the east coast. But for seasoned surfers, the remote west is where to ride some of the country's best and biggest waves, like this tubular monster caught off Kalbarri.
