Lone pine tree on sea stack, rocky beach, anchored boats, Platja de sa Boadella

A scraggly, stone-bound pine marks the northeast end of a busy bay in Catalonia, Spain. Tossa de Mar, a community of about 5,500 set on the glamorous Costa Brava, is popular with beachgoers and boaters alike: It's not uncommon to see dozens of sleek watercraft anchored in the bay or beached on the soft sand. On the beach's opposite end, a medieval castle overlooks the seaside, accenting the modern resort town with a touch of history. If that's not far enough back in time for you, Tossa de Mar is also home to Roman ruins dating to the 1st century BCE.
