Fishing harbor, red rorbuer, snowy mountains, Hamnøya

You might need your keyboard set to Norwegian to write home about this sleepy corner of Europe where Festhæltinden peak looms over Hamnøya harbor, just up the road from a village known only as Å. Despite the Lofoten region's maritime focus, with fishing villages and marinas set on islands large and small, cars are the main mode of transport around here. The Lofoten Mainland Connection, completed in 2007, offers an express route to Å via an impressive series of bridges and tunnels, including (if you'll allow us one more special character) the 2-mile-long Sløverfjord submarine tunnel.
