Known for its symmetry and smooth snowcap, the volcanic cone called Parinacota is seen beneath billowy lenticular clouds in this soft-glow shot. Along with its neighbor peak Pomerape, Parinacota is part of the short Nevados de Payachatas chain marking the border of Bolivia and Chile. Volcanoes abound here in the Andes, numbering around 150 and divided into four distinct zones. Along with the Central Volcanic Zone that includes Parinacota, the Northern Zone covers the volcanoes of Ecuador and Colombia, and the Southern and Austral Zones straddle the long, squiggly border of Chile and Argentina.
