Jaguars once ranged from the Southwestern United States to Patagonia, but nowadays, more than half of them live in the Amazon Basin. Just outside that mighty river's reaches, this big kitty is haunches-deep in a different waterlogged habitat: the Pantanal, a swampy section of South America renowned as the biggest wetland in the world. Here in this biodiversity hotbed, jaguars top a food chain comprising 150-plus local mammal species. Critters advised to watch out for these hungry feline neighbors include giant anteaters, capybaras, tapirs, and howler monkeys.
