Fisherman's Bastion and Matthias Church, Night, Budapest

Though Budapest, Hungary, traces its history to medieval times and beyond, much of its current cityscape took shape near the turn of the 20th century. The turreted barrier in the foreground of our photo is part of the Fisherman's Bastion, completed in 1902 to replace the walls first built on this hillside near the Danube in the 1700s. Behind the bastion rises the studded steeple of Matthias Church, built in the 14th century and restored in the 19th (though local lore dates the original structure all the way back to the year 1015). Within the same walkable complex, you'll find another famed structure with a history of renovations and additions: Buda Castle.
