Before changing its name to Thailand in 1939, this Southeast Asian nation was known by outsiders as the Kingdom of Siam—and in a sense, Sukhothai is where it all started. Founded by the Khmer Empire, this ancient city was overthrown in the mid-13th century by Thai tribes led by Si Inthrathit. Rising quickly to become one of several regional Thai kingdoms known as mandalas, Sukhothai was later absorbed by more powerful neighbors. But Si Inthrathit's influence lived on in his bloodline, considered the first Siamese dynasty. Today, Sukhothai is designated as a UNESCO site, protecting its influential architecture and civic works like canals, ponds, and dams.
